Acupuncture and IVF

How Acupuncture May Support You During Your Fertility Journey

Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years, and while modern research is still working to fully understand how it works, it has become an increasingly common complementary therapy for individuals navigating fertility challenges and assisted reproductive technologies such as IVF.

You may have experienced acupuncture before for pain management, sports injuries, headaches, among many other concerns. In fertility care, acupuncture is often used as part of a broader support plan, helping patients manage the physical and emotional demands of trying to conceive.

Fertility Treatment Can Be Stressful

Whether you are trying to conceive naturally, undergoing fertility testing, or moving through IVF cycles, the experience can be emotionally taxing. Many individuals report feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, grief, frustration, and loss of control throughout the process.

Research has shown that stress, anxiety, and depression are common among people experiencing infertility. In fact, emotional distress is one of the reasons some patients choose not to continue fertility treatment after an unsuccessful IVF cycle.

While "managing stress" is often easier said than done, having consistent support throughout your fertility journey can make a meaningful difference. For many people, acupuncture becomes one of those regular touch points - a dedicated time to slow down, reconnect with their bodies, and receive care during what can otherwise feel like an overwhelming process.

How Might Acupuncture Support Fertility?

Researchers are still working to understand exactly how acupuncture influences reproductive health. While more high-quality studies are needed, several potential mechanisms have been proposed.

Supporting the Stress Response

One of the most compelling reasons patients seek acupuncture during fertility treatment is for stress reduction and emotional well-being.

Acupuncture appears to influence the body's stress-response systems, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. It may also affect the release of endorphins and other neurotransmitters involved in mood regulation and relaxation.

Many patients report feeling calmer, more grounded, and better able to cope with the emotional ups and downs of fertility treatment after acupuncture sessions. While stress reduction alone does not guarantee pregnancy, supporting mental and emotional health is an important part of comprehensive fertility care.

Improving Uterine and Ovarian Blood Flow

One of the most studied fertility-related effects of acupuncture is its impact on blood flow to the reproductive organs.

Some research suggests acupuncture may help reduce resistance in the uterine arteries, potentially improving blood flow to the uterus and endometrium. Researchers have proposed that this may contribute to a more receptive environment for implantation, although more research is needed to fully understand how this impacts conception and pregnancy.

Supporting Endometrial Receptivity

Emerging research suggests acupuncture may influence factors involved in endometrial receptivity - the ability of the uterine lining to support implantation.

Scientists are exploring whether acupuncture may affect blood vessel formation, cellular signaling, and other processes that help prepare the endometrium during the implantation window.

Influencing Immune and Inflammatory Pathways

Successful implantation requires a carefully balanced immune environment. Some studies suggest acupuncture may influence inflammatory and immune signaling molecules involved in reproduction, though this remains an evolving area of research.

Nervous System Regulation

Acupuncture may influence autonomic nervous system activity - think “rest and digest” vs. “fight or flight” parts of our nervous system. Researchers have proposed that these effects could impact uterine contractility, blood flow, and hormonal signaling. Once again, more research is needed here!

Supporting Ovarian Function

There is also emerging research examining acupuncture in individuals with diminished ovarian reserve or poor ovarian response. Some studies suggest acupuncture may support follicular development and ovarian function, though that evidence is still evolving and not ready for us to make any big conclusions about.

What Does the Research Actually Tell Us?

Many of the proposed mechanisms above are biologically plausible and supported by early research, but fertility is complex. We still don’t fully understand why acupuncture appears to benefit some patients.

What we do know is that acupuncture is generally considered low risk when performed by a qualified practitioner and may provide meaningful support for stress, anxiety, mood, and overall well-being during fertility treatment. For many patients, these benefits alone make it a valuable addition to their care plan.

A Team-Based Approach to Fertility Care

At Crafted Balance, we believe fertility care works best when you feel supported as a whole person, not just as a set of lab results or treatment protocols.

Many of our patients find it helpful to have regular touch points with their healthcare team throughout their fertility journey. For some, that support comes through acupuncture appointments. For others, psychotherapy provides a dedicated space to process the emotional challenges of infertility, IVF, pregnancy loss, or the uncertainty that often accompanies fertility treatment.

Our practitioners work collaboratively to support patients at every stage of their journey. Alongside acupuncture with Nicole Brown, RAc, our fertility-focused naturopathic doctor, Dr. Fiona Callender, ND, provides evidence-informed guidance on nutrition, supplementation, cycle optimization, and reproductive health. Our psychotherapist, Nicole Armtrong, RP offers focused mental health support for individuals navigating fertility challenges.

Together, these touch points can help create a stronger foundation of support during what is often one of life's most demanding experiences.

When Should Acupuncture Be Scheduled?

Treatment timing is individualized based on your goals and fertility plan.

If you are trying to conceive without intervention, appointments may be scheduled around different phases of your menstrual cycle. If you are undergoing IVF or other assisted reproductive treatments, acupuncture may be timed around ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, frozen embryo transfer (FET), or other key milestones.

Nicole will work with you to develop a treatment plan that complements your fertility care and aligns with your unique needs.
